EASTON, MD: The Eastern Shore Chamber Music Festival will celebrate its 23rd season this year, presenting six concerts on the weekends of June 6 - 8 and 13-15, 2008, at venues in Easton, Chestertown, Queenstown, and Talbot County, MD. Since 1985, the Festival’s internationally renowned artists have presented a repertoire ranging from the baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary genres to new works commissioned by the Festival.
Free performances include a Concert in the Streets on June 1, a Young People’s Concert on June 5, and an Open Rehearsal on June 11.
Artistic Co-Directors Marcy Rosen, cello, and founder of the Mendelssohn String Quartet, and J. Lawrie Bloom, principal bass clarinet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, have chosen works by such familiar composers as Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Mendelssohn, as well as selections from contemporary composers such as Andre Pevin and a Maryland Premiere of a piece by Peter Child.
Festival high points will include a performance by the winners of the March 2008 Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition on June 8, at the Avalon Theatre, Easton. During the two-week Festival, seventeen artists who have appeared in concerts worldwide will combine in ensembles of strings, winds, horn, and piano. Many performers have had long association with the Festival. Some are newcomers. All are exceptionally talented.
Other Festival highlights: A June 7 concert and picnic buffet at the Aspen Institute, Wye Woods Center, Queenstown, MD • A June 8 matinee and reception at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Chestertown, MD • A June 14 concert at Newberry Auditorium, Calhoon MEBA Engineering School, near Easton, MD.
The Festival finale on June 15—the benefit “Angels” Concert—will be held at a historic estate in Talbot County, a setting to perfectly reflect the original and purest meaning of “chamber” music.
The Festival will offer three free performances: Concert in the Streets, June 1, 3 P.M., Harrison and Dover Streets, Easton • Young People’s Concert, June 5, 5:30 P.M. for children and parents, Avalon Theatre, Easton • Open Rehearsal, June 11, 10:00 A.M. for seniors and friends of chamber music, Academy Art Museum, Easton.
